Carrefour to Approach from Regions
The world second retailing giant, Carrefour, is staging the Russia’s expansion. The first hypermarket of the French chain will probably open next year in Gorizont (Horizon) mall, Rostov-on-Don, and the company is said to be eyeing sites in Siberia. For Carrefour, it will be much easier to work in the regions than in the capital, the retailers speculate.
Gorizont owners are currently in talks with Carrefour about accommodating a hypermarket of the latter, said Dan Polonsky, general director at Gorizont mall. “We set to negotiations far back in May. Then, the chain’s representatives arrived for the first stage. The lease with Carrefour hasn’t been signed yet, but the French looked pleased with the mall,”
In Gorizont, Carrefour is expected to replace today’s lessee, Ramstore. Besides, the owners plan to widen the sales area from 7,000 sq meters to 15,000 sq meters, which is in line with Carrefour’s standards. Carrefour didn’t comment on its Russian plans yesterday, but a raft of regional developers forecasted it would launch the first hypermarket here already in 2007.
Nowadays, three global retailers are operating on the market of Russia - Metro Group (Metro Cash&Carry и Real), French Auchan Group and German Rewe Group (in partnership with Russia’s Marta Holding). Together with Carrefour, Russia will probably welcome the stores of its key competitor, the U.S. Wal-Mart, which is now in talks to buy out a part of retail business of Turkish Koç Holding.

M&S to Approach Moscow from Fringes
Turkish FIBA will be promoting M&S chain in Moscow. So far, the European retailers have preferred to take root in Russia through local partners. For instance, C&A and British House are promoted by Russian Trading Group. Zara is in charge of the Stockmann business.
The location of the first M&S in Moscow is yet unclear. Two months ago, the rumors were running that it would be launched in Ramstor City-2, the Sevastopolsky Avenue. In Ramenka that managers Ramstor chain they declined either to confirm or deny the data yesterday.
The experts call M&S a really strong player but doubt that the company could count on a breakthrough in tandem with a Turkish partner. M&S is viewed as a rather expensive and aristocratic brand, while the Turks generally trade in the serial cheap brands, specified Alexey Volkov, marketing director at Nomenar.

Metro Group turnover will exceed 1 bln euros in 2005 in Russia
| Metro Group turnover will exceed 1 bln euros in 2005 in Russia MOSCOW. May 27 (Interfax) - Metro Group, one of the biggest commercial companies in the world, will see its turnover exceed 1 billion euros in 2005 in Russia, Hans-Joachim Korber, the company's president, told reporters. Metro Group turnover was 893 million euros in 2004 in Russia, up 75% from the previous year, Korber said. The growth rate will be slightly lower this year, but turnover will certainly surpass 1 billion euros, he said. Russia currently accounts for less than 2% of Metro Group's world turnover and Korber is confident that Russia will become one of the company's main markets in 2005. He said it was enough just to look at the population of Russia, which is some 140 million, in order to understand its potential. He said Russia is the most attractive country in Eastern Europe for Metro. The number of Metro Group stores will increase to 50 in Russia over the next three years, Korber said. There are currently 14 small-wholesale Metro Cash & Carry stores in Russia - six in Moscow, two in St. Petersburg and one each in Yaroslavl, Kazan, Volgograd, Samara, Rostov-na-Donu and Krasnodar. Another nine stores at a cost of about 15 million euros each will open by the end of 2005. Two Real hypermarkets will also open in Moscow. Metro Groups is planning to open eight small-wholesale Metro Cash & Carry stores and five Real hypermarkets a year in Russia. Another two Real hypermarkets are already being built in St. Petersburg and they will open in 2006. |
